As part of the enabling works for a new 13 storey critical care unit at the Royal Victoria Hospital, Belfast, Albion Drilling Group was appointed by piling and foundations contractor, FK Lowry Piling Ltd, to install ground anchors in 2008.

The works involved installing two rows of temporary anchors around the excavations in order to hold back the contiguous piled wall installed by FK Lowry Piling. Anchor diameters were 28mm, 32mm and 36mm and loads ranged from 120kN to 450kN.

Multi-Stage removable strand anchors, also supplied by Dywidag Systems, were used in a section of the retaining structure to accommodate the next phase of the piling work which ran adjacent to the site.
